Why Do Employers Check Criminal History?

By HireRight

Employers generally do not assume that people applying for jobs are lying on their resumes and job applications — quite the contrary. The background check is often a final step taken by employers to help ensure a sound hiring decision and protect the employer from a number of potential risks.  As discussed, employers are looking for information, including criminal record history that will help them evaluate the honesty, character, safety and qualifications of their applicants.

Accordingly, if an employer catches you being dishonest by not disclosing a criminal record  (when lawfully requested), it raises a red flag to a potential employer and could result in loss of the job opportunity. The best approach is to be honest and explain the situation.
